As a pet owner, you already know that your pets are more than just toys or accessories; they are living beings with personalities, feelings, and emotions. To be happy, they require consistent care and attention. Having a pet is a huge but rewarding responsibility.
How to be a responsible pet owner
Every pet parent wants to know that their pets are getting everything they need to be happy and healthy. Here are five ways to continue to be a responsible pet owner.
Conduct your research
Before you get a pet, you should learn how to care for it properly. If you are getting something other than a dog or cat, make sure you learn about specifics like the type of living space they would be comfortable in.
You should also research the breed or species to which your pet belongs. German shepherds, for example, prefer temperatures that do not exceed 5°C. In contrast, Australian cattle dogs and Afghan hounds can tolerate high heat.
Doing your homework before purchasing a pet can help you avoid costly mistakes that cost you money or your pet’s life.
Make your home pet-friendly
Making your home safe for your pets should be one of your priorities. Keep toxic plants away from pets and any xylitol-containing products securely locked away. Xylitol is especially dangerous to dogs and cats and is increasingly used as an artificial sweetener in food products. Of course, keep plenty of toys, beds, and fluffy blankets on hand to keep your pet comfortable. Ask your puppy vet for any treats that will not harm your pets.
Schedule regular checkups
You are responsible for your pet’s health as a pet owner, which includes regular veterinary care. You must ensure that your pet is in good health. They will never tell us if they are feeling ill. If you take your pet to the vet regularly, they can prevent and treat any disease that may arise.
While annual visits to the vet are required, there are other times you may need to meet with your veterinarian. “Aside from regular physical exams, senior pets may need yearly vaccinations and pet laboratory exams. They based it on age, lifestyle, the region you live in, health concerns, disease risk, or travel plans,” the physician says.
It is also important that you take them for pet dental care regularly to avoid any periodontal disease.
Exercise your pet daily
Most animals require physical activity to develop immunity, build muscles, and expend pent-up energy. Border collies and Siberian huskies are known to be more active than others. Providing them with a time and place to expend all their extra energy.
Consider taking them for a stroll through a nearby park. You can also ride your bike around the neighborhood with your dog. In addition, you can take your dog swimming at a pool or the beach. You can use this time to teach your dog basic obedience and manners.
Goldfish, like cats and dogs, require exercise. While you cannot attach a leash to your fish, you can provide them with a large enough tank to explore. You simply need to be inventive in creating an aquarium with mazes and obstacles for them to play with.
Make playtime fun
Playtime is important in developing and strengthening your bond with your pet. It enables you to develop a fun and positive relationship with your pet while giving them a productive outlet for their energy.
“Play prevents pets from becoming bored, frustrated, and developing behavioral issues,” says Shermaine Wilson Cox, DVM, an Atlanta-based veterinarian.
You should allot time to play with your pet actively each day. Dogs are companion animals, so it is good for their mental well-being to interact positively with their owner. All household members should participate in playtime and walks.
Because not all pets enjoy the same types of play, you must determine what gets your pet up and moving. You will have to try out different cat or dog toys until you find something they like.
